While I don’t consider myself an overly religious person, sometimes prayer is all we have. Prayer. Hope. Wishes. That’s it. So here are mine for you. And for myself, come to think of it.
May this coming year be better than your last. May you forget about all the things that happened to you and not for you. May you forgive yourself for everything you regret.Because I think we all know how toxic that can be.We all need a little less toxicity in our lives, given the current climate.
I hope you constantly seek out the things that bring you joy and don’t let them slip away from you. I hope you do as Bukowski suggested, find what you love and let it kill you. Figuratively speaking of course.By this, I mean you ought to let it consume you as much as you can.
May you find the strength to deal with everything difficult that’ll face you in the coming year. And may you be soft enough that the strength doesn’t make you hard. And if you need help, I hope you seek it. And seek it in the right places. From the right people. That part’s important as well. Don’t put your trust in people who don’t trust you.
If you haven’t already, I hope this year brings you someone who makes you feel right. Someone you don’t tire of. Someone who listens to you, no matter how stupid you sound. Or how worthless you feel when the world gets to you. Someone who stimulates your mind and your soul as much as they do your body. And may they love you as much as you love them.
Despite the week(s) you just spent dealing with people who infuriate you, I hope you find a way to enjoy them in the year to come. Even if they are the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nut house. Hallelujah, where’s the Tylenol? May you find it in your heart to love those assholes despite the fact that they are, in fact, bastards.
But don’t forget this; you can choose who’s in your life to a certain degree. Surround yourself with people who don’t doubt your dreams. People who love you no matter what idiocy you spew or mistakes you make. People who make you laugh. People who encourage you. Life is so much easier that way.
May you take care of yourself as well as you can manage. Whatever that means for you, you’re worth the effort. May your vices not take you over, but may you not avoid a bit of pleasure once in a while. You deserve that too. If it harms none, do what you will, as the mantra goes. We all need to live by that, I think.
I hope you take risks. Because that’s the only way you’re going to accomplish anything. And may your dreams not just be for sleeping. I think we could all do with a bit more dreaming while we’re awake, couldn’t we? And may your life be as beautiful as your dreams are.
I hope you’re not as hard on yourself as you think you deserve. No matter what mistakes you’ve made, you have every right to be happy. I hope you have a year full of dancing, and laughing, and crying when and making art, and making love. Because you deserve a year that’s better than the last. I like to think we all do.
Though we’ve all lost heroes this year, may we all strive to be more like them. To live with more purity. To have just a pinch more abandon. And may we not lose as much as we lost in 2016. We’ve all been through just a little more hell than we needed in that respect. But this year will be better than the last. It has to be.
And in closing, may you never drink more alcohol than your liver can handle. Especially tonight of all nights. Enjoy your New Year’s kiss. Because we sure to hell won’t be enjoying our New Year’s Day hangovers.
